Learning Intention: To explore subtraction using the ‘whole-part-part’ strategy.
Option 1: Subtraction Bowling
Use toy bowling pins, or set up 10 plastic cups against a wall in a bowling pin formation. The player rolls a ball towards the cups to try and knock the “pins” over. Count how many were knocked over and record that number on the recording sheet / whiteboard. Students can check their answer by counting how many are left standing.
Option 2: Build-it Subtraction Cards
Using materials such as LEGO, buttons or pasta, make the first number shown on the card. Take away the other number from your group of objects to solve the sum.
Option 3: Subtraction Game
